English Language Arts
English Language Arts class is designed to help your child grow as a reader and writer. Through the use of particular strategies at various points before, during and after reading, he or she will be better able to process and apply what he or she reads. The goal of instruction, based on Common Core State Standards (below), is to increase the understanding of what the students read so that they are reading at a higher level. In addition, students will learn to write for self expression, and to express opinions and judgements using the accepted conventions of English.
We will be following the new Common Core State Standards. For more information please visit:
Instruction to meet these standards will include reading all different kinds of material (novels, poems, biographies, newspapers etc.) and writing using many formats ( business letters, poems, narratives, descriptions, essays, etc.)
Grading Policy Grades for each marking period will be based on the following:
Every 5 weeks your sixth grader will receive a progress report to share with you. This report will include comments about work and behavior for all their classes in the previous two weeks. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 832-4521.
If your child is absent or owes work, he/she will have until the next progress to make it up. If the work is not made up by that time, it will become a zero. If your child will be absent for an extended period of time, you may call the guidance office to request the missed work.
