Second Grade Curriculum

Common core standards:  Website:  http://www.corestandards.org/

English Language Arts:

Reading - Our reading time will consist of reading stories and/or poems together, independently, in small groups or read alouds.   Some of the areas that we cover during this time are reading strategies, vocabulary, genre, story elements and text connections.

Writing - The students will participate in Writer's Workshop daily.  Students will engage in the Writing Process which will consist of Prewriting, Drafting, Editing, Revising, and Publishing.

Fundations - This is a phonics, spelling program in which the children receive direct instruction in spelling, phonics and the rules of our language.

Math

Our math program is primarily hands.  I try to make real life connections for the children between our learning targets and using math in our daily lives.

Science and Social Studies:  We will follow the EngageNY lessons which focus on introducing science and social studies through literature.

Specials:  We will have physical education, art, music, and library.

Our curriculum coincides with the Common Core Standards for each of the core areas mentioned above.  Those standards can be reviewed by clicking on the corresponding link for each academic area.
