Standard 1:  Communication Skills

Students will be able to use a language other than English for communication.

 

Standard 2:  Cultural Understanding

Students will develop cross-cultural skills and understandings.

 

Standard 3:  Description

The Foreign Language Department offers courses in Spanish and French leading to the Regents examination.  Foreign Languages are taught to facilitate maximum competency in speaking, listening, reading and writing.  In addition, the cultures of the people are studied through different readings, art and videos.

 

All students entering seventh grade must complete two years of a foreign language by the end of eighth grade.  Successful completion of this may earn a student one high school credit.  All students will need three credits of foreign language in order to qualify for the Advanced Regents Diploma.  Beginning with the Class of 2005 and all thereafter, students need one credit to satisfy the basic requirement for a Regents Diploma, or a Local Diploma.  Three creidts are needed for the Advanced Regents Diploma

      II.      Course Description

 

The course will develop a solid foundation in the four modes of communication: speaking, listening, reading and writing.  This course will introduce the student to verb conjugations and vocabulary in the target language.  Some reading and speaking activities will be incorporated into the cultural aspects.

 

    III.      Grade Requirement

 

Grade 7

     V.      Suggested Prerequisite

 

None

Students should study vocabulary and verbs daily.

      II.      Course Description

 

The emphasis of this course is to increase and continue the student’s knowledge of the language and culture of the target countries.  The student will initiate and sustain conversation, auditory comprehension, including general and detailed understanding of longer conversations.  Reading and writing skills are further developed.

 

    III.      Grade Requirement

 

Grade 8

 

   IV.      Mandatory Prerequisite

 

Successful completion of Spanish 7 or French 7

 

     V.      Suggested Prerequisite

 

None

 

   VI.      Comments

 

County wide Exam is one-fifth of the final grade average.

      II.      Course Description

 

Spanish II or French II is designed to continue the study of the language and cultures of the target language countries.  The course focuses on improvement of skills with further emphasis on communication in the target language: listening and speaking skills are used to help the students increase their ability to use the language correctly.  More reading and writing skills will continue to be developed.

 

    III.      Grade Requirement

 

High school

 

   IV.      Mandatory Prerequisite

 

Successful completion of Spanish I or Spanish 8.

 

     V.      Suggested Prerequisite

 

None

 

   VI.      Comments

 

All Dover High School students are required to take this course.  Any exception will be determined by the Principal.

      II.      Course Description

 

Spanish III or French III is designed to continue the study of the language and cultures of the Spanish or French speaking world.  The ten required curriculum topics reflective of daily life are explored in detail.  There is emphasis on practice and mastery of the target language studied.

 

    III.      Grade Requirement

 

High school

 

   IV.      Mandatory Prerequisite

 

Successful completion of Spanish II or French II.

 

     V.      Suggested Prerequisite

 

None

 

   VI.      Comments

 

This course is required for all students graduating with an Advanced Regents Diploma.

 

 


 

FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION COURSE DESCRIPTION



        I.      Spanish IV,  French IV

 

School Exam                                                                                       No Weighting

45 minutes per day for one year                                                One Credit

 

      II.      Course Description

 

Advanced grammar is taught.  The student will read and analyze poems, short stories, essays and articles in the target language.  The discussions are held in the target language with total class participation.  Writing assignments on appropriate topics are used to improve writing and communication skills.

 

    III.      Grade Requirement

 

High school

 

   IV.      Mandatory Prerequisite

 

Successful completion of Spanish III or French III with a grade of 85 or above OR Foreign Language Department recommendation.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION COURSE DESCRIPTION



        I.      World Cultures/Travel

 

Local Exam                                                                              No Weighting

45 minutes per day for one year                                                One Credit

 

      II.      Course Description

 

The purpose of this course is to introduce student to a wide variety of peoples and cultures around the world to understand how and why they live the way they do.  It is also to foster an attitude of respect towards peoples and cultures that are different from ours.  Within each journey to a country, the students will be expected to used computer research for informational facts, pictures, videos and articles on cultural features.  There will be group discussions as well as individual presentations to increase knowledge, awareness adn understanding of other countries and how they compare/contract to USA.  There will be quizzes and tests on each country visited and generally a country project assigned.  The FINAL EXAM will be a project about an aspect studied throughout the year.

Grades 11-12, preference will be given to upperclassmen
