General Music
Course Description
The purpose of this class is to introduce you to the
basic elements of music theory, music history, and careers in the music
industry. All students are expected to come to class with a willingness to
learn and an open mind to new ideas and sounds of music. You will be
exposed to many different types of music from the six specific eras of music
history to learning how to draw notes and create music, as well as learning
about the many different careers available in the music industry.
Your willingness to have an open mind to these new ideas will benefit not only
you, but your classmates as well.

Course Objectives
- To study and understand the basic elements of
music theory and be able to use these skills to compose and notate music
- To develop auditory skills through rhythmic and
melodic dictations
- To study composers from different musical
periods and their music in
relation to world history
- To study various careers in music and how they
have and do impact society
- To learn and develop skills needed to
effectively work independently and with others

Requirements/Materials Needed
- Listening log – in the form of a 1-subject
spiral notebook/marble notebook.
- Two sharpened pencils
- You are
responsible for any and ALL missed work due to ANY absence from class
- Any HOMEWORK assigned is due the next day the
class meets unless a separate due date is listed. Points will be lost if it is
not finished on the due date.

The following guidelines for GRADING will comprise of:
Participation: 45%
This includes attendance, punctuality, attitude, cooperation, responsibility,
self-discipline and participation in class activities. You must be in class,
prepared, and on time to earn full participation points. You are expected to
put forth your best effort, every day.
Test/Quizzes/Homework: 45%
There will be a number of quizzes during each quarter and an end
of the year cumulative test. Homework
will be given occasionally, by discretion of the teacher.
Listening Logs: 10%
Listening logs will be completed each class period and will
contribute to 10% of your overall grade.
It is very important to be in attendance at each class to be able to
complete your listening log portfolio.
Many of the activities we will do in class will require group
and whole class participation, so please feel welcome to contribute to class discussions
or question/answer sessions. Your input
is a valuable asset to the class.
