Welcome to Second Grade!!

Dear Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed this hot and sunny summer. It is great to be back in school. I am looking forward to an enjoyable and rewarding year with your child. We will begin our school year getting to know each other as well as establishing our classroom routines and guidelines.

I  look forward to being a partner with you in your child’s education. As we work together this year,I hope to instill an enjoyment in each child for reading and writing as well as working and playing with others. It was great to see so many of the children excited to return to school and eager to learn!

Each student will have an Agenda Planner this year. Homework will be detailed for the week as well as the specials for each day. This can also be used as a communication tool for us. Please initial the planner each night. Parents are encouraged to review homework with their child. Also, please check the work your child brings home each day and praise their efforts. If a signature or corrections are indicated, the work should be returned the next day with the corrections completed. ** Homework and any notes for the teacher should be put in your child’s “Take Home” folder. **

The children will have reading homework each night. Students should read for 20 minutes each night. Math, writing or spelling/grammar homework will begin the week of September 16. Written homework should not take more than 15 minutes each night. Children should also be practicing Math Facts/Rocket Math for at least 5 minutes each night.

It is important that your child develop good study skills at home as well as at school. Good habits will help your child throughout his/her school years. Please help your child empty his/her folder and book bag nightly.

Bus Safety:

Please remind your child of the importance in following their bus driver’s rules and instructions.

A written excuse from the parent/guardian explaining the reason for the absence is required by law. These notes should be placed in your child’s “Take Home” folder. Regular attendance and getting to school on time are very important to your child’s adjustment and success in school. Arrival time is 8:25 and the children are unpacked and settled by 8:40. Even if your child is a few minutes late, it causes an interruption for the entire class and may mean your child has missed important directions for the day.

A lunch menu is sent home at the beginning of each month. Please encourage your child to keep his/her lunch money in an envelope that has their first and last name on it. Lunches can also be prepaid. We have lunch at 12:10 each day.

We are on a six-day cycle. Our Specials schedule is listed below. Don’t forget to wear sneakers when we have Physical Education.

Day 1 – Physical Education

Day 2 - Art

Day 3 –Computer

Day 4 – Physical Education

Day 5 - Music

Day 6 - Library

Our class will take a short break each day to enjoy a nutritious snack. Please remember to include something healthy in their book bags each day, even when they are purchasing lunch. Students may be working on something at the time of snack, so please pack something easy to eat and water to drink (for example, apple slices, pretzels or other finger foods).

Please label all of your child’s belongings. This should include lunch boxes, book bags, coats, hats, and gloves/mittens. There are many items that go unrecognized and lost each year, even within the classroom.

I look forward to seeing you at Curriculum night on September 10 at 5:30. This is a time for parents/guardians to learn about Second Grade. There will be signups for Parent/Teacher conferences in December and classroom volunteers.

A packet of information and forms is being sent home today. Please review the information in the packet and return the necessary forms to school tomorrow. All children entering second grade must have a recent physical on file in our nurse’s office. Please make sure that your contact information is correct.

We use stationery and envelopes for our “Post Office” during Writer’s Choice. If you have extra stationary, cards or envelopes feel free to send them in with your child. The children love to use cards and stationery when writing during Writer’s Choice.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. You may call the office and leave a message, write a note or send me an email. Communication between home and school is very important! Let’s work together to make this a terrific year for your second grader!

I look forward to meeting you! Have a great week.
