General Music Classes
Every student at Dover Elementary School
is enrolled in the general music program. Students attend a music
class for 40 minutes once during every 6 day rotation. In music class
we listen, play, dance, sing, describe, explain, compare, express, and
experience a variety of genres that span world cultures and history.
Both the 4th and 5th grade choruses meet
once a week to practice for the winter and spring concerts. The 3rd
grade chorus practices their chorus songs during their general music
time. The songs performed come from a variety of cultures and may be
supplemented with additional instruments. The goals of chorus are to
encourage students to become comfortable with their singing voices,
develop their ability to sing independent parts simultaneously, and
realize the collective potential that becomes possible when
participating in a large group.
4th Grade Band
The primarily focus of the 4th grade
band program is to ensure that each member develops positive playing
habits that support success and growth on their instrument. Each
member is assigned a group which meets once a week for a half hour
lesson. Groups will always meet on the same day each week, but the
lesson times will change from week to week.
5th Grade Band
After having spent an entire year
developing their skills on their instruments, 5th grade band members
are now ready to begin playing with others in a large ensemble. In
addition to their half hour weekly lesson, they will also meet once a
week as a large group to rehearse music that contains independent
instrument parts, and is therefore slightly more complex than what they
experience in their small group lessons. The goal of 5th grade band is
not only to express the music that is written on the page, but to begin
to listen to others while simultaneously playing, and responding to the
cues of the director.
