Language therapy and speech (articulation) services are provided to special education students as mandated on their Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Regular education students are included under the Speech Improvement program as space permits.
Language therapy addresses the areas of receptive language such as following directions, understanding concepts and vocabulary, and listening comprehension skills. Expressive language deals with the child's ability to ask and answer questions, carry on conversations with adults and peers, use correct grammar and construct sentences. Articulation therapy deals with the child's ability to correctly pronounce and sequence speech sounds (phonemes). These skills, as well as rhyming, are prerequisites to success in learning to read.
