Welcome to Reading

This  class is designed to help your child grow as a reader.   Through the use of particular strategies at various points before, during and after reading, he or she will be better able to process and apply what he or she reads.  The goal of instruction, based on the Common Core State Standards , is to increase the understanding of what the students read so that they are reading at a higher level.

Independent Reading:

Each student is required to read a book a month. To help attain this goal , they are asked to read 20 minutes every night.  This grade will count as a quiz grade in their average.  Each student's reading ability has been assessed and they are encouraged to read within that range. Their comprehension will be assessed through book reviews.

Instruction to meet these standards will include reading all different kinds of material (novels, peoms, biographies, newspapers etc.) and writing using many formats ( business letters, peoms, narratives, descriptions, essays, etc.)

The first novel we will be reading is Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli.
