 Hi Families!

Our class is a 12-1-1 program, which means there are 12 children, 1 teacher, and 1 aide. This student-to-teacher ratio allows your child to have more individualized instruction that supports academic success.

We focus on moving our children to the next level academically and socially, and therefore encourage students to complete tasks as independently as possible. Our students unpack their own backpacks, turn in their homework and papers, maintain their own lunch money, keep their workbooks and desks organzied, and have a shared responsibility for our classroom environment.

You may find the following information useful throughout the school year:

Daily Necessities: It is important that your child arrives prepared to learn! Every day your child will need to bring his/her backpack with his/her homework notebook (completed, sheet signed), communication log, one nutritious snack, and a folder. These (and other items like lunch money) are belongings that we expect your child to be responsible for on a daily basis. The students will unpack and place these items in the designated areas.

Homework: Homework will be assigned and will correspond to your child’s work in the classroom. Each week, a homework sheet will be added to your child’s planner that will list your child’s daily assignments. Each day, a parent or guardian must initial the homework sheet to ensure that homework assignments are complete. Your child also needs to read the story and sight word in his or her reading bag nightly. Of course, you are encouraged to read with your child daily! Whether you read the story, your child ‘reads’ the pictures, or your child reads to you, it’s important to consistently practice reading skills at home.

Communication: Each student will keep a communication log in his/her backpack. Weekly updates will be posted regarding your child’s overall performance and daily notes will be written as needed to share any important information. You are also encouraged to share any pertinent information or ask general questions in this journal. Information we may find helpful in the classroom include changes in your child’s sleep or eating habits, addition or termination of medication, or changes in your child’s bussing routine. For immediate or significant questions and concerns, please call me between 8:15 and 3:15.

Attendance: School begins at 8:25 and ends at 3:00.  If you need to take your child out of school and are aware of this situation, please send in a note (stating the time) so that your child will be prepared. You can sign your child out in the main office and he/she will be sent down promptly. Additionally, all absences or changes in busses need to be communicated in writing or a phone call.

Celebrations: Our class will enjoy a variety of celebrations this year: birthdays, holidays, etc. For birthdays, parents are invited to send or bring a special snack to be shared and a favorite story from home to be read during our afternoon meeting. This can happen during our lunch (11:20-11:55). Holiday celebrations will be communicated to you through letters.

I am very much looking forward to working with you and your child this year! Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
